Government extends duty-free imports of yellow peas till February 2025

The government has extended the import of yellow peas without duty and MIP (minimum import price) till February next year. However, the imports are subjected to registration under online Import Monitoring System, with immediate effect, for all import consignments where Bill of Lading (Shipped on Board) is issued on or before February 28, 2025. 

In December 2023, the government had allowed duty-free imports of yellow peas till March 2024. Further, it had extended till October and December. India's import of pulses rose 90 per cent annually to 47.38 lakh tonnes during 2023-24 to meet domestic demand. All India production of pulses has increased from 163.23 lakh tonnes during 2015-16 to 244.93 lakh tonnes during 2023-24 (as per 3rd Advance Estimates). In 2021-22, import of pulses stood at 26.99 lakh tonnes. 

Meanwhile, pulses sowing area increased marginally to 120.65 lakh hectares as on December 6, 2024 of this rabi season from 115.70 lakh hectares in the previous year, with gram covering 86.09 lakh hectares and lentil 14.75 lakh hectares.
