India's exports of castor oil decline 17% in January 2025

Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA) has said that India's export of castor oil declined 16.98% to 44,168 metric tonnes (MT) (Provisional) in the month of January 2025 as compared to 53,204 MT (Provisional) in the same month last year. In the value terms, India exported castor oil worth Rs 596.01 crore in January 2025 as against Rs 652.74 crore in January 2024, i.e. down by 8.69%.  

In the month of December 2024, castor oil export stood at 41,339 MT, while its value stood at Rs 556.50 crore. According to SEA data, in ten months of FY25 (April to January) export of castor oil stood at 554,641 MT, while in value terms, it was registered at Rs 6908.34 crore. 

India is the largest producer of castor seed in the world and Gujarat is the largest in India. Castor oil is an important ingredient for the global specialty chemical industry as it is the only commercial source of hydroxylate fatty acid. Castor oil is used for a number of industrial applications including paints, varnish, resins and plasticisers.
