Non-life insurers report 12% rise in gross direct premium underwritten for January 2026

The General Insurance Council in its latest data (Provisional) has showed that non-life insurers reported 11.73% rise in gross direct premium underwritten at Rs 31062.67 crore for the month of January 2026 (excluding specialised companies - Agricultural Insurance Company of India and ECGC) as compared to Rs 27801.60 crore in the January 2025.

Of the total, general insurance companies, with market share of 83.38%, garnered gross direct premium underwritten of Rs 26535.04 crore in the month under review as compared to Rs 24137.35 crore in the corresponding month of previous year, registering a growth of 9.93%. Among all, premium of Raheja QBE General Insurance up by 688.35%, Kshema General insurance up by 548.24%, Navi General Insurance up by 187.97%, Zurich Kotak Mahindra General Insurance up by 104.84% and Universal Sompo General Insurance Co up by 56.35%. 

Standalone health insurers, with market share of 12.64%, garnered gross direct premium underwritten of Rs 4527.63 crore in January 2026 as compared to Rs 3664.25 crore in January 2025, i.e. up by 23.56%. Among all, Galaxy Health Insurance Company up by 660.82%, Narayana Health Insurance company up by 98.00%, Care Health Insurance co up by 37.74% and Niva bupa health insurance company up by 34.98%.

Specialised insurers showed growth of 86.40% in gross direct premium underwritten at Rs 2283.58 crore in January 2026 as compared to Rs 1225.1 crore in the January 2025. Within the specialised insurers, premium of Agricultural Insurance Company of India up by 95.84% in the month of January 2026, while ECGC was down by 0.55%.
