Life insurers report 22% rise in new business premium in January 2026

Life Insurance Council in its latest data (Provisional) has showed that life insurers posted 21.58% year-on-year (Y-o-Y) rise in new business premium (NBP) in the month of January 2026 at Rs 37478.35 crore as compared to Rs 30825.17 crore in the year-ago period. Out of which, the private insurers’ premium increased by 17.23% Y-o-Y to Rs 17037.34 crore in January 2026 from Rs 14532.50 crore. On the other hand, Life Insurance Corporation of India’s premium increased 25.46% to Rs 20441.02 crore in January 2026 from Rs 16292.67 crore in January 2025. 

Of the total premium collected by life insurance companies in the month of January 2026, individual single premium stood at Rs 5043.56 crore as against Rs 4127.67 crore in 2025, i.e. up by 22.19%. Individual Non-Single premium surged 8.92% to Rs 11580.39 crore in January 2026 as compared to Rs 10632.32 crore in January 2025, Group Single Premium stood at Rs 19316.99 crore in January 2026. Group Non-Single Premium stood at Rs 209.67 crore in January 2026 and Group Yearly Renewable Premium increased to Rs 1327.74 crore in January 2026. 

Among the private insurance companies, SBI Life Insurance Company reported 7.89% Y-o-Y growth in premium to Rs 3533.76 crore in January 2026, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company’s premium rose by 11.95% Y-o-Y at Rs 1990.08 crore in January 2026. Axis Max Life Insurance Company’s premium increased 24.00% Y-o-Y at Rs 1235.45 crore in January 2026. Bajaj Life Insurance reported 34.49% Y-o-Y growth in premiums to Rs 1190.97 crore in January 2026. TATA AIA Life Insurance Company reported 20.41% Y-o-Y growth in premiums to Rs 1034.33 crore in January 2026.
