Non-life insurers report 11% rise in gross direct premium underwritten for March 2026

The General Insurance Council in its latest data (Provisional) has showed that non-life insurers reported 10.61% rise in gross direct premium underwritten at Rs 28,766.36 crore for the month of March 2026 (excluding specialised companies - Agricultural Insurance Company of India and ECGC) as compared to Rs 26,006.90 crore in the March 2025.

Of the total, general insurance companies, with market share of 82.88%, garnered gross direct premium underwritten of Rs 22913.95 crore in the month under review as compared to Rs 21206.93 crore in the corresponding month of previous year, registering a growth of 8.05%. Among all, premium of Kshema General insurance Co up by 1498.42%, Raheja QBE General Insurance Co up by 172.05%, Zuno General Insurance Co up by 36.72%, IndusInd General Insurance Company up by 35.97% and Acko General Insurance Co up by 28.48%.

Standalone health insurers, with market share of 13.64%, garnered gross direct premium underwritten of Rs 5,852.41 crore in March 2026 as compared to Rs 4,799.97 crore in March 2025, i.e. up by 29.81%. Among all, Narayana Health Insurance company up by 2608.06%, Galaxy Health Insurance Company up by 358.36%, Niva bupa health insurance company up by 37.04%, Care Health Insurance co up by 32.98% and Star Health & Allied Insurance Co up by 15.74%. 

Specialised insurers showed de-growth of 73.16% in gross direct premium underwritten at Rs 155.55 crore in March 2026 as compared to Rs 579.54 crore in the March 2025. Within the specialised insurers, premium of Agricultural Insurance Company of India down by 107.50% in the month of March 2026, while ECGC was up by 7.85%.
