Non-life insurers report 8% growth in gross direct premium underwritten for April 2026

The General Insurance Council in its latest data (Provisional) has showed that non-life insurers reported 8.35% growth in gross direct premium underwritten at Rs 36,294.72 crore for the month of April 2026 (excluding specialised companies - Agricultural Insurance Company of India and ECGC) as compared to Rs 33,498.79 crore in the April 2025. Of the total, general insurance companies, with market share of 88.83%, garnered gross direct premium underwritten of Rs 32349.20 crore in the month under review as compared to Rs 30605.10 crore in the corresponding month of previous year, registering a growth of 5.70%. 

Among other major players, premium of the New India Assurance Co stood at Rs 6084.96 crore in April 2026 up by 0.97% Y-o-Y, ICICI Lombard General Insurance Co at Rs 3654.01 crore up by 1.72%, Tata AIG General Insurance Co at Rs 2845.42 up by 38.10%, The Oriental Insurance Co at Rs 2670.25 crore up by 1.54%, Bajaj General Insurance at Rs 2665.55 crore up by 10.93%, United India Insurance Co at Rs 2117.24 crore up by 1.15%, HDFC Ergo General Insurance Co at Rs 1743.27 crore up by 7.61%, National Insurance Co at Rs 1605.18 crore up by 5.00% and SBI General Insurance Co at Rs 1299.53 up by 0.69%.

Besides, standalone health insurers, with market share of 10.83%, garnered gross direct premium underwritten of Rs 3,945.52 crore in April 2026 as compared to Rs 2,893.69 crore in April 2025, i.e. up by 36.35%. Among all, premium of Star Health & Allied Insurance Co at Rs 1264.54 crore up by 19.28%, Care Health Insurance at Rs 1008.77 crore up by 39.24%, Aditya Birla Health Insurance Co at Rs 731.98 crore up by 66.97%, Niva bupa health insurance company at Rs 629.26 crore up by 30.26% and ManipalCigna Health Insurance Co at Rs 279.98 crore up by 52.34%.

Moreover, specialised insurers (market share 0.34%) showed growth of 31.58% in gross direct premium underwritten at Rs 122.95 crore in April 2026 as compared to Rs 93.44 crore in the April 2025. Within the specialised insurers, premium of Agricultural Insurance Company of India up by 185.12% to Rs 16.48 crore in the month of April 2026, while premium of ECGC was up by 21.46% to Rs 106.47 crore.
