Non-life insurers report 9% growth in gross direct premium underwritten for May 2026

The General Insurance Council in its latest data (Provisional) has showed that non-life insurers reported 9.26% growth in gross direct premium underwritten at Rs 24,188.31 crore for the month of May 2026 (excluding specialised companies - Agricultural Insurance Company of India and ECGC) as compared to Rs 22,137.54 crore in the May 2025. Of the total, general insurance companies, with market share of 86.72%, garnered gross direct premium underwritten of Rs 20,345.90 crore in the month under review as compared to Rs 19,220.77 crore in the corresponding month of previous year, registering a growth of 5.85%. 

Among other major players, premium of the New India Assurance Co stood at Rs 2,945.64 crore in May 2026, up by 0.03% Y-o-Y; ICICI Lombard General Insurance Co at Rs 2,405.03 crore, up by 11.59%; Tata AIG General Insurance Co at Rs 1,926.03 crore, up by 34.69%; Bajaj General Insurance at Rs 1,343.10 crore, up by 1.56%; HDFC Ergo General Insurance Co at Rs 1,219.52 crore, up by 31.15%; SBI General Insurance Co at Rs 1,054.67 crore, up by 18.75%. On the other hand, premium of the United India Insurance Co stood at Rs 1,816.86 crore, down by 0.57%; The Oriental Insurance Co at Rs 1,298.85 crore, down by 11.82%; National Insurance Co at Rs 971.17 crore, down by 8.69%; Go Digit General Insurance at Rs 759.67 crore, down by 0.84%

Besides, standalone health insurers, with market share of 13.06%, garnered gross direct premium underwritten of Rs 3,842.41 crore in May 2026 as compared to Rs 2,916.77 crore in May 2025, i.e. up by 31.74%. Among all, premium of Star Health & Allied Insurance Co at Rs 1,428.20 crore up by 19.11%, Care Health Insurance at Rs 948.02 crore up by 47.84%, Aditya Birla Health Insurance Co at Rs 519.60 crore up by 50.07%, Niva Bupa health insurance company at Rs 722.53 crore up by 30.29% and ManipalCigna Health Insurance Co at Rs 203.38 crore up by 19.20%.

Moreover, specialised insurers (market share 0.22%) showed de-growth of 94.91% in gross direct premium underwritten at Rs 6.65 crore in May 2026 as compared to Rs 130.70 crore in the May 2025. Within the specialised insurers, premium of Agricultural Insurance Company of India was negative, while premium of ECGC was up by 3.77% to Rs 112.69 crore.
