Life insurers’ new business premium rises by 5% for May

Life Insurance Council in its latest data (Provisional) has showed that life insurers posted 5.15% year-on-year (Y-o-Y) rise in new business premium (NBP) in the month of May 2026 at Rs 32030.84 crore as compared to Rs 30463.21 crore in the same month a year-ago. Out of which, the private insurers’ premium increased by 7.72% Y-o-Y to Rs 12988.68 crore in May 2026 from Rs 12058.16 crore May 2025. On the other hand, Life Insurance Corporation of India’s premium increased by 3.46% to Rs 19042.16 crore in May 2026 from Rs 18405.05 crore in May 2025. 

Of the total premium collected by life insurance companies in the month of May 2026, individual single premium stood at Rs 3837.66 crore as against Rs 3525.28 crore in May 2025, i.e. up by 8.86%; individual non-single premium surged 13.47% to Rs 8040.86 crore in May 2026 as compared to Rs 7086.10 crore in May 2025. Group Single Premium stood at Rs 18573.90 crore in May 2026, a Y-o-Y growth of 2.80%; and Group Non-Single Premium stood at Rs 21.34 crore in May 2026. Besides, Group Yearly Renewable Premium increased to Rs 1557.08 crore in May 2026 from Rs 15.26 crore in May 2025. 

Among the private insurance companies, Bajaj Life Insurance’s premium jumped 65.84% Y-o-Y to Rs 1235.93 crore, Tata Aia Life Insurance Company’s premium grew by 34.00% Y-o-Y to Rs 890.62 crore, Kotak Mahindra Life Insurance Company’s premium expanded by 30.66% Y-o-Y to Rs 594.42 crore, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company’s premium increased by 13.88% Y-o-Y to Rs 1602.64 crore, Axis Max Life Insurance’s premium advanced by 12.88% Y-o-Y to Rs 954.71 crore, Aditya Birla Sun Life Insurance Company’s premium was up by by 4.55% Y-o-Y to Rs 600.51 crore, and Acko Life Insurance Company’ premium doubled to Rs 18.88 crore in May 2026. On the other hand, HDFC Life Insurance Company’s premium declined by 14.74% Y-o-Y to Rs 2577.10 crore and SBI Life Insurance Company’s premium was down by 9.57% Y-o-Y to Rs 2668.38 crore.
