Gross direct premium underwritten of non-life insurers surge 16.7% in June

The General Insurance Council in its latest data (Provisional) has showed that non-life insurers reported 16.7% growth in gross direct premium underwritten at Rs 27,145.28 crore for the month of June 2026 (excluding specialised companies - Agricultural Insurance Company of India and ECGC) as compared to Rs 23,265.02 crore in the June 2025. Of the total, general insurance companies, with market share of 85.93%, garnered gross direct premium underwritten of Rs 22,771.94 crore in the month under review as compared to Rs 19,924.37 crore in the corresponding month of previous year, registering a growth of 14.3%. 

Among other major players, premium of the New India Assurance Co stood at Rs 3,670.13 crore in June 2026, up by 10.3% Y-o-Y; ICICI Lombard General Insurance Co at Rs 2,258.83 crore, up by 13.7%; Tata AIG General Insurance Co at Rs 1,787.20 crore, up by 28.0%; Bajaj General Insurance at Rs 1,760.06 crore, up by 21.8%; HDFC Ergo General Insurance Co at Rs 1,162.48 crore, up by 33.5%; SBI General Insurance Co at Rs 1,152.08 crore, up by 17.0%. On the other hand, premium of IndusInd General Insurance Company at Rs 707.15 crore, down by 31.0%; Magma General Insurance at Rs 254.96 crore, down by 4.9%; Go Digit General Insurance at Rs 719.54 crore, down by 2.8%

Besides, standalone health insurers, with market share of 13.85%, garnered gross direct premium underwritten of Rs 4,373.34 crore in June 2026 as compared to Rs 3,340.65 crore in June 2025, i.e. up by 30.9%. Among all, premium of Star Health & Allied Insurance Co at Rs 1,594.35 crore up by 19.2%, Care Health Insurance at Rs 970.37 crore up by 41.9%, Aditya Birla Health Insurance Co at Rs 753.78 crore up by 39.1%, Niva Bupa health insurance company at Rs 798.17 crore up by 34.3% and ManipalCigna Health Insurance Co at Rs 220.95 crore up by 24.4%. Meanwhile, premium of Galaxy Health Insurance Company and Narayana Health Insurance stood at Rs 28.79 crore and Rs 6.93 crore, respectively. 

Moreover, specialised insurers (market share 0.22%) showed de-growth of 73.6% in gross direct premium underwritten at Rs 51.06 crore in June 2026 as compared to Rs 193.34 crore in the June 2025. Within the specialised insurers, premium of Agricultural Insurance Company of India was negative, while premium of ECGC was down by 0.1% to Rs 125.30 crore.
