Gross direct premium underwritten of non-life insurers rises 10% in July

The General Insurance Council in its latest data (Provisional) has showed that non-life insurers reported 10.45% growth in gross direct premium underwritten at Rs 31001.21 crore for the month of July 2026 (excluding specialised companies - Agricultural Insurance Company of India and ECGC) as compared to Rs 28067.97 crore in the July 2025. Of the total, general insurance companies, with market share of 85.34%, garnered gross direct premium underwritten of Rs 26335.32 crore in the month under review as compared to Rs 24445.84 crore in the corresponding month of previous year, registering a growth of 7.73%. 

Among other major players, premium of Acko General Insurance jumped 46.47% Y-o-Y to Rs 286.91 crore in July 2026; premium of Zurich Kotak Mahindra General Insurance Co surged 62.35% Y-o-Y to Rs 237.96 crore; premium of Royal Sundaram General Insurance Co soared 29.55% Y-o-Y to Rs 503.33 crore; premium of United India Insurance Co 28.13% Y-o-Y to Rs 2846.62 crore; premium of SBI General Insurance Co 24.99% Y-o-Y to Rs 1686.39 crore; and premium of Tata AIG General Insurance Co 20.30% Y-o-Y to Rs 1872.21 crore. On the other hand, premium of Generali Central Insurance Company slipped 28.09% Y-o-Y to Rs 367.15 crore; premium of IndusInd General Insurance Company declined 25.08% Y-o-Y to Rs 707.54 crore; premium of The Oriental Insurance Co fell 17.56% Y-o-Y to Rs 1681.66 crore; and premium of Magma General Insurance was down by 0.29% Y-o-Y to Rs 295.73 crore.

Besides, standalone health insurers, with market share of 14.10%, garnered gross direct premium underwritten of Rs 4665.89 crore in July 2026 as compared to Rs 3622.13 crore in July 2025, i.e. up by 28.82%. Among all, premium of Galaxy Health Insurance Company jumped more than doubled to Rs 25.93 crore; ManipalCigna Health Insurance Co at Rs 216.97 crore up by 42.55%; Care Health Insurance at Rs 1173.95 crore up by 40.40%; Niva Bupa health insurance company at Rs 852.19 crore up by 33.71%; Aditya Birla Health Insurance Co at Rs 589.88 crore up by 27.57%; premium of Star Health & Allied Insurance Co at Rs 1803.63 crore up by 18.77%; and premium of Narayana Health Insurance stood at Rs 3.34 crore up by 15.57%. 

Moreover, specialised insurers (market share 0.56%) showed de-growth of 75.65% in gross direct premium underwritten at Rs 396.38 crore in July 2026 as compared to Rs 1627.65 crore in the July 2025. Within the specialised insurers, premium of Agricultural Insurance Company of India fell by 82.40% to Rs 265.02 crore, while premium of ECGC was up by 7.90% to Rs 131.36 crore.
