IRDAI extends deadline for public comments on insurance distribution reforms
Oct-26-2026

In view of the significant interest and to facilitate wider participation, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has extended the last date for the submission of comments on insurance distribution reforms until October 31, 2026, providing additional time for stakeholders and members of the public to submit their feedback and suggestions.

The IRDAI released a two-part Consultation Paper on the proposed distribution reforms, titled ‘Recalibrating Economics of Insurance Distribution’, on September 23, 2026, inviting comments and suggestions from the public, policyholders, insurers, intermediaries, and other stakeholders. The consultation paper seeks to obtain stakeholder and public views on proposed reforms relating to insurance distribution, with the objective of fostering a more efficient and inclusive insurance distribution ecosystem.

The consultation has received an encouraging response, with over 650 comments received so far. IRDAI encourages all interested stakeholders and members of the public to utilise the extended timeline and submit their comments and suggestions. The feedback received will help inform the further examination and refinement of the proposed reforms.

The proposed reforms include lower expense of management (EoM) limits for insurers and product- and channel-specific caps on commissions. They also envisage separate limits for individual and corporate distributors, with higher caps for individuals to account for the greater effort involved in sales.
