India produces 8.45 lakh tonnes of sugar in October month of 2026-27 season: NFCSF
Nov-03-2026

The National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF) has said that India produced 8.45 lakh tonnes of sugar in the first month of the 2026-27 season, which began on October 8, boosting domestic supplies during the ongoing festival season. Production increased from 1 lakh tonne in the year-ago period. Total sugar production stood at 279.60 lakh tonne in the 2025-26 season (October-September). As many as 152 mills were operating as of October 31, compared to 31 mills a year ago.

Maharashtra, the country's largest producing state, accounted for the bulk of the output at 7.20 lakh tonne against nil in the year-ago period. About 123 mills were in operation in the state. The state normally begins crushing on November 15 but started almost a month early this year.

In Karnataka, the third-largest producer, seven mills produced 80,000 tonne of sugar till October 31, slightly higher than the 70,000 tonne produced by 17 mills in the corresponding period last year. The mills crushed about 8.33 lakh tonne of sugarcane. Three mills in Uttar Pradesh, the country's second largest sugar-producing state, have started operations, but production figures have not yet been reported.

NFCSF Managing Director Prakash Naiknavare said 'Early crushing has helped Maharashtra farmers save the crop from wilting due to water shortage and improved the availability of sugar during the festival season'. The higher output comes despite protests by cane growers in Karnataka and Maharashtra, who are demanding a higher cane support price and an increase in the minimum selling price (MSP) of sugar and ethanol.
