A first of its kind Summit on Corporate Governance is being organized in Mumbai by the ex Chairman of SEBI. The provisions of the Companies Act, 2013 have given Corporate Governance a statutory framework. However the increasing acceptance of Corporate Governance practices as value enhancers on a sustainable basis has to be advocated and driven by persons who see themselves as change agents on a mission. They are the true Gatekeepers of Governance, in that they facilitate the acceptance and adoption of good practices while keeping out what is undesirable and unproductive. Notwithstanding the prescriptive regime envisaged in Clause 49 of the Listing Agreement, the practice of Corporate Governance in spirit leaves a lot to be desired. This Summit is a clarion call to the Gatekeepers of Governance to spread the message that good governance is a necessary condition for sustained performance in increasingly competitive times. The Keynote Speaker for the event is Mr. U. K. Sinha (Chairman, SEBI). The Summit has an illustrious list of speakers from the corporate world.

The Summit is organized by Excellence Enablers Private Limited (EEPL) an entity founded by Mr M Damodaran, ex Chairman of SEBI and before that of UTI and IDBI. EEPL is an initiative that focuses on the implementation of better corporate governance practices, improvement of Board performance, including audit and evaluation, training of Directors and engagement with stakeholders of governance. It is founded on the firm belief that the gap between performance and potential can, and must, be bridged. Consistent with that belief, all the offerings are tailor-made to the specific needs of the organization or the individuals concerned.

Given that the founder of EEPL, Mr. M. Damodaran, introduced Clause 49 of the Listing Agreement, dealing with corporate governance in India, and has been part of both public and private sector Boards, as well as performing and underperforming Boards, EEPL offers experience based consultancy, and courses on the journey from compliance through governance to performance. Further, given his success in turning around organizations such as UTI that had been written off, it is uniquely positioned to offer courses on leadership, organizational transformation, and building winning teams.
