Setback to Ajit Pawar: 4 leaders quit NCP after poll drubbing
Jul-17-2024

In a setback to the Ajit Pawar-led NCP, four leaders of the party's Pimpri-Chinchwad unit have resigned and are likely to join the Sharad Pawar faction.

The leaders, who left the party, include Ajit Gavahane, who was the chief of NCP’s Pimpri-Chinchwad unit, Yash Sane, who served as NCP Pimpri-Chinchwad Students’ Wing, and two former corporators -Rahul Bhosale and Pankaj Bhalekar. The leaders who left the party likely to join Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) on July 20 in Pimpri-Chinchwad.

Earlier in the day, Ajit Gavhane said that he resigned on Tuesday and will be meeting all ex-corporators of another Vidhan Sabha constituency. ‘We will accordingly decide our upcoming strategy. We are going to take blessings of Pawar Sahab (Sharad Pawar). We will make a decision together,’ he added.  Sharad Pawar said last month those who wanted to ‘weaken’ his party would not be taken in, but he would accept leaders who would not ‘hurt’ the image of the party and could strengthen the organisation.

The development comes following the party’s poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Ajit Pawar’s faction won only one out of the five parliamentary seats it contested in Maharashtra. While, the Sharad Pawar faction, which is part of the Opposition INDIA bloc, won eight of the 10 seats it contested. Last year, Ajit Pawar, along with several party legislators, joined Maharashtra’s Mahayuti coalition government including the BJP and the Shiv Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Ajit Pawar subsequently became the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra.
