Congress holds CEC meeting to finalise candidates for J-K elections

The Congress' Central Election Committee (CEC) meeting today held at the AICC headquarters in New Delhi to finalise names of candidates for the upcoming assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir.

The meeting was headed by party president Mallikarjun Kharge, attended by former party chief Rahul Gandhi, general secretary in-charge (organisation) K C Venugopal, Jammu and Kashmir unit chief Tariq Hameed Karra and other leaders. After the meeting, congress leader Ambika Soni said that apart from three seat, congress has finalised its candidates for all the constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir and second list will be announced soon.

The Congress had issued its first list of nine candidates for the three-phase assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, fielding party general secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir from Dooru and former state unit chief Vikar Rasool Wani from Banihal. The congress also fielded Surinder Singh Channi from the Tral seat, Amanullah Mantoo from Devsar, Peerzada Mohammad Syed from Anantnag, Shaikh Zafarullah from Inderwal, Nadeem Sharief from Bhadarwah, Sheikh Riyaz from Doda and Pradeep Kumar Bhagat from Doda West.

Congress has entered into a pre-poll alliance with the National Conference in Jammu and Kashmir. National Conference will contest from 51 seats while Congress will fight from 32 seats. Besides, there will be a friendly contest in five seats and they have left one seat each for CPI (M) and Panthers Party.

Polls to the 90-member J-K assembly will be held in three phases on September 18, September 25 and October 1.
