Rahul Gandhi to Kickstart Congress Campaign in J&K with public rallies

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will start the Congress' campaign for the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections with rallies in Ramban and Anantnag districts on Wednesday. 

Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) chief Tariq Hamid Karra said, ‘Rahul ji will kickstart the party's campaign from tomorrow. He will address two public rallies in Ramban and Anantnag districts in support of Congress candidates on Wednesday’. On Wednesday evening, Rahul Gandhi will address rally in Ramban district and campaign for former Jammu and Kashmir unit chief of the party Vikar Rasool Wani, who is contesting from the Banihal assembly constituency. Gandhi later travel to Anantnag district, where he will address another rally in support of Congress General Secretary and former minister Ghulam Ahmed Mir, who is contesting the Dooru assembly segment. JKPCC chief also exuded confidence that Gandhi's campaign will give a new impetus to the party's public outreach during the elections and improve its poll prospects. The Congress has lined up over 40-star campaigners, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Ghulam Ahmed Mir, Vikar Rasool Wani, and former Jammu and Kashmir Congress chief Peerzada Mohammad Syed are contesting in the first phase of the elections. The Congress is contesting the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls in alliance with the National Conference. Both parties have finalised a seat-sharing formula, with the National Conference and Congress contesting on 51 and 32 seats, respectively.

Jammu and Kashmir, which has 90 Assembly seats, will vote in three phases on September 18, September 25 and October 1. Earlier, the vote counting was scheduled for October 4 but later it was changed to October 8.
