Atishi to replace Arvind Kejriwal as Delhi CM
Sep-17-2024

Atishi Marlena has been appointed as the next Chief Minister of Delhi by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislators. This development comes after Kejriwal's announcement to step down from the Chief Minister’s position on September 15.

Atishi's name was proposed by Kejriwal at the meeting of the legislature party, and it was unanimously accepted by the AAP MLAs. Kejriwal's shocking announcement came two days after the Supreme Court granted him bail in a corruption case linked to Delhi's now-scrapped liquor policy. The bail order paved the way for his release from prison, six months after his arrest.

Addressing the media after the announcement, Atishi thanked her mentor Mr Kejriwal. She said, ‘It can only happen in the Aam Aadmi Party, and under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal, that I was made an MLA and then a minister and now the Chief Minister. I am happy that I have become the Chief Minister, but sad that my elder brother, Arvind Kejriwal, will be resigning from his post. There is just one Chief Minister of Delhi – Arvind Kejriwal. She alleged that the BJP has conspired to create difficulties for Arvind Kejriwal. Atishi will be the youngest serving chief minister of the country after assuming charge.

Atishi, who represents the Kalkaji constituency, would take oath during a special Assembly session on September 26-27. Assembly polls in the national capital are scheduled for February, but Mr Kejriwal has demanded that they be held in November along with the Maharashtra election. The AAP leader and his former Deputy Manish Sisodia have said they would go to the people to seek their support and not return to the top jobs before the people's verdict.
