One Nation One Election cleared by Union Cabinet
Sep-18-2024

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Cabinet cleared the proposal for ‘one nation, one election’, which aims to synchronise the elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies to a single schedule. The bill pertaining to ‘one nation, one election’, also known as ‘one nation, one poll’ (ONOP), is likely to be introduced in the upcoming winter session of Parliament.

The development came after the report of the high-level committee, which was headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind, was placed before the Union Cabinet today. The committee had submitted its report to President Droupadi Murmu on March 15 this year, recommending simultaneous elections for Lok Sabha, state Assemblies. The panel had also proposed to set up an ‘Implementation Group’ to look into the execution of the recommendations. The high-level committee said simultaneous polls will help save resources, spur development and social cohesion, deepen ‘foundations of democratic rubric’ and help realise the aspirations of ‘India, that is Bharat’.

Addressing the media, Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said simultaneous polls would be held in two phases. The first phase will cover Lok Sabha elections and Assembly elections, while the second phase will cover local body elections, within 100 days of the first phase.

Attacking the central government over the acceptance of the proposal, Congress spokesperson Manickam Tagore said the bill would be defeated on the floor of the House. Samajwadi Party said the government was ‘confused’ about implementing ONOP and should make it clear how such a move would help the country. TMC MP Derek O’Brien said, ‘One nation, one election is just another cheap stunt from the anti-democratic BJP.’

While, the BJP called the Congress ‘desh virodhi’ (against the country) for its stand on the proposal. The government believes that this change will not only streamline the electoral process but also enhance governance and reduce costs.
