Resolution demanding restoration of J-K statehood will be passed in first cabinet meet: Omar Abdullah
Oct-09-2024

A day after the National Conference-Congress alliance won a majority in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections, the party’s Vice President and likely-to-be CM Omar Abdullah said that NC-Congress government will pass a resolution demanding the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood in its first cabinet meeting.

Addressing reporters, Omar Abdullah said, ‘After the formation of the government, I hope in the first cabinet meeting, the cabinet will pass a resolution impressing upon the Centre to restore the statehood. The government should then take that resolution to the prime minister’. He said the Prime Minister, Home Minister, and senior BJP ministers have repeatedly assured us that three steps will be taken in J&K – delimitation, elections, and then statehood. Delimitation and elections are done; now only statehood remains. He also expressed hope that the government in Jammu and Kashmir will be able to run smoothly unlike in Delhi.

Abdullah said that a legislative party meeting of the National Conference will be held on Thursday followed by talks with allies, the Congress and CPI(M), to decide on the leader of the alliance and government formation. He said the government that comes in the next few days will not be a government of the NC or of the alliance, or it will not be a government of those that voted for the alliance, it will be a government for every single individual of J-K, regardless of who they voted for, or whether they voted at all.

To a question about whether the PDP would be a part of the coalition government, the NC leader said there were no discussions over that as of now. The election results on Tuesday gave a huge lead to the NC with 42 seats and six to its alliance partner, the Congress, in the 90-member assembly. The BJP emerged dominant in the Jammu region with 29 seats.
