Omar Abdullah takes oath as first chief minister of UT of Jammu and Kashmir

National Conference (NC) leader Omar Abdullah was sworn in as chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, the first elected government in the union territory since 2019 when Article 370 was abrogated.

Lt Governor Manoj Sinha administered the oath of office and secrecy to Abdullah at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC). Along with Abdullah, five ministers -- Sakina Masood (Itoo), Javed Dar, Javed Rana, Surinder Choudhary, and Satish Sharma also took the oath of office. The INDIA Bloc members, including Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Mallikarjun Kharge, as well as SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, Left leaders Prakash Karat and D Raja, DMK's Kanimozhi, and NCP's Supriya Sule, People's Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti were attended oath taking ceremony.

While, Prime Minister extended his best wishes to the National Conference leader and assured that the central government will work closely with the Union Territory for its development. Omar Abdullah is also the third generation of the Abdullah family to hold the position, following his grandfather Sheikh Abdullah and his father Farooq Abdullah. He was unanimously elected as the leader of the NC Legislature Party following the party's success in the recent elections, where it won 42 out of 90 seats.
