SC agrees to list plea for restoration of statehood in Jammu and Kashmir
Oct-17-2024

The Supreme Court of India (SC) said that it will consider listing a plea seeking time-bound restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, who appeared for the applicants has mentioned the application for urgent listing of the matter to a three-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra. Advocate told the bench, ‘There is an MA (Miscellaneous Application) for conferring statehood. It was noted (in last year's judgement) that it has to be time-bound’, to which the CJI replied: ‘I will deal with it.’ The application was filed by Zahoor Ahmad Bhat, an academician, and Khurshaid Ahmad Malik, a socio-political activist from Jammu and Kashmir.

On December 11, 2023, in a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court had unanimously upheld the revocation of Article 370 of the Constitution, which accorded a special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, in 2019 and ordered that assembly elections be held there by September 2024. Yesterday, National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah took oath as CM of Jammu and Kashmir, along with five members of his cabinet. Abdullah emphasised that his government's priority would be to amplify the voices of the people and expressed confidence that Jammu and Kashmir’s Union Territory status would soon end, & full statehood would be restored in the near future.
