One Nation, One Election': BJP Members echo party stand at parliamentary panel meeting
Jan-08-2025

The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to review the 'One Nation One Poll' (ONOP) proposal held its first meeting today in New Delhi, with BJP members lauding the concept, and opposition MPs questioning it.

The 39-member panel, which includes representatives from both parliamentary houses, is chaired by BJP MP PP Chaudhary, a former Minister of State for Law. It includes members from all major political parties, such as Priyanka Gandhi Vadra (Congress), Sanjay Jha (JD(U)), Shrikant Shinde (Shiv Sena), Sanjay Singh (AAP), and Kalyan Banerjee (Trinamool Congress). Initially comprised of 31 members, the committee's size was expanded to 39 after multiple political parties expressed interest in participating. It now includes 27 members from the Lok Sabha and 12 from the Rajya Sabha. Former Union ministers Anurag Thakur, Parshottam Rupala and Manish Tewari, along with several other lawmakers, including Anil Baluni, Bansuri Swaraj and Sambit Patra, are also members of the committee.

The committee’s deliberations are expected to play a critical role in shaping the discourse on simultaneous elections, a proposal aimed at aligning polls for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, and other bodies to streamline governance and reduce electoral expense. The Constitution 129th Amendment Bill, 2024 and The Union Territories Laws Amendment Bill, 2024 – were introduced in the Lok Sabha during the Winter Session of Parliament to achieve one nation one election. They propose simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies across the country. It was referred to the JPC for scrutiny and discussion on the bill.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Vishnu Dayal Ram said the proposed 'One Nation, One Election' Bill is in the interest of the nation. A Congress member said the idea is against the basic fabric of the Constitution, while a Trinamool Congress MP said it negates people's democratic rights.
