India’s wholesale inflation surges to 2.37% in December

Inflation based on wholesale price index (WPI) in India surged in the month of December 2024 to 2.37% as compared to 1.89% in November 2024, due to increase in prices of non-food articles, electricity and coal.

The Component wise, primary articles index, having weight of 22.62%, decreased by 2.07% to 193.8 (provisional) in December 2024 from 197.9 (provisional) for the month of November 2024, as prices of food articles and crude petroleum & natural gas decreased, while the prices of non-food articles and minerals increased in December 2024 as compared to November 2024.

Fuel & Power index, having weight of 13.15%, increased by 1.90% to 149.9 (provisional) in December 2024 from 147.1 (provisional) for the month of November 2024, on account of rise in prices of electricity and coal. However, the price of mineral oils decreased in December 2024 as compared to November, 2024.

Further, Manufactured Products constituting the major portion of the index with weight of 64.23%, was 143.0 in December 2024 (provisional), same as that in the month of November 2024 (provisional). Meanwhile, for the month of October, 2024, the final Wholesale Price Index and inflation rate for 'All Commodities' (Base: 2011-12=100) stood at 156.7 and 2.75% respectively.
