Opposition slam government silence on deportation of Indians staying illegally in US

Several MPs from the opposition parties criticized the government over the manner in which Indians living illegally in the US were sent back and raised questions about the treatment of the migrants. The deportees, who arrived in Amritsar on a US military aircraft on Wednesday, claimed their hands and legs were cuffed throughout the journey and only released upon arrival at the airport.

Opposition MPs, including Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and SP leader Akhilesh Yadav, protested in the Parliament premises against the treatment meted out to Indians by US authorities. Some opposition members even wore handcuffs during the. Protest.

Congress leaders Gaurav Gogoi and KC Venugopal slammed the government’s handling of the situation, accusing it of weakness and saying that Modi’s personal image mattered more than the dignity of the Indian citizens involved. Former Union minister and Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said the US has a legal right to deport people living there illegally. But we are protesting the way they were sent back. He suggested a civilian aircraft could have been used for the purpose. TMC's Kirti Azad also questioned the way Indians were sent back, describing the incident as ‘painful’.

While, Union minister Chirag Paswan said the government will put forth its views at an appropriate time. He said, ‘It is a policy decision and it should not be politicised by the opposition’.
