Tariffs imposed by US will 'completely devastate' Indian economy: Rahul Gandhi
Apr-03-2025

Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi said that reciprocal tariffs or import duties imposed by the US will ‘completely devastate’ India’s economy and asked what the central government is doing to counter the impact of the US trade retaliation.

Raising the issues during the Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha (LS), Rahul Gandhi accused the government of not taking a firm stand against foreigners and compromising with the interests of the country, claiming that the 26 per cent reciprocal tariff imposed by the US on India would ‘devastate our economy’, more specifically the auto and pharmaceutical industry.

Former congress chief slammed the government over the celebration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties by India and China. ‘It is a known fact that China is sitting on 4,000 sq km of our territory. I was shocked to see, sometime back, that our Foreign Secretary was cutting a cake with the Chinese Ambassador,’ Rahul Gandhi said, wondering if it was a ‘celebration of our 20 soldiers’ supreme sacrifice.’

Congress MP further said, ‘We are not against normalcy but there should be status quo before that. We should get our land back. It has also come to my notice that the President and the Prime Minister have written to the Chinese’. He said foreign policy is about managing the external countries and pointed out that on one hand, ‘you have given China 4,000 sq km of our land’, and on the other hand our ally US has suddenly decided to impose tariffs on us.

Recalling late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s statement on foreign policy, Leader of Opposition in LS said, ‘Somebody once asked Indira Gandhi ji-- 'In the matter of foreign policy you lean left or you lean right', and Indira Gandhi ji answered 'I don't lean left or right, I stand straight. I am Indian and I stand straight'. Attacking the ruling BJP, Gandhi claimed that both the saffron party and RSS bow their heads before every foreigner.

The US has announced 27 per cent reciprocal tariffs on India, saying New Delhi imposes high import duties on American goods.
