Retail inflation eases to 3.16% in April

India's retail inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), eased to 3.16 per cent in the month of April 2025. There was decline of 18 basis points in headline inflation of April 2025 in comparison to March 2025. It is the lowest year-on-year inflation after July 2019. CPI inflation had stood at 3.34 per cent in March 2025 and 4.83 per cent in April 2024.  The CPI-based inflation remains comfortably within the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) medium-term target of 4 per cent and well inside the 2-6 per cent tolerance band. Besides, the Food inflation or the All India Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) in April 2025 stood at 1.78 per cent, lower compared to 2.69 per cent in March 2025. It is also lower as compared to 8.70 per cent in April 2024.

The NSO, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) in its data has showed that Rural CPI (General) in April 2025 stood at 2.92 per cent over 3.25 per cent in March 2025. The Urban CPI (General) stood at 3.36 per cent in April as against 3.43 per cent in March. The index value for Rural, Urban and Combined CPI (General) stood at 194.0, 190.9 and 192.6 respectively, in April 2025.  The price data are collected from selected 1114 urban Markets and 1181 villages covering all States/UTs through personal visits by field staff of Field Operations Division of NSO, MoSPI on a weekly roster. During the month of April 2025, NSO collected prices from 100 per cent villages and 98.6 per cent  urban markets while the market-wise prices reported therein were 89.4 per cent  for rural and 92.3 per cent  for urban.

Besides, Food and beverage inflation eased to 2.14 per cent in April from 2.88 per cent in March, as vegetable prices further declined to (-) 10.98 per cent from (-) 7.04 in the prior month. Also, inflation in meat and fish came down to (-) 0.35 per cent from 0.32 per cent in preceding month. Inflation for cereals stood at 5.35 per cent in April against a 5.93 percent increase in March. Inflation in pulses and products remained in deflationary territory at (-) 5.23 per cent compared to (-) 2.73 per cent last month. The inflation rate for milk and milk products was 2.72 per cent in April, as compared to 2.56 per cent in the previous month.  Clothing and footwear inflation was 2.67 per cent in April from 2.62 per cent in the previous month, while Housing inflation inched down to 3.00 per cent from 3.03 per cent in the prior month. Fuel and light inflation was 2.92 per cent in April as compared to 1.48 per cent in March.
