Undeclared Emergency@11: Congress hits back with ‘five-fold assault’ charge against BJP
Jun-25-2025

In a scathing attack on the Modi government, the Congress general secretary in charge of communications Jairam Ramesh alleged that over the past 11 years (since 2014) — the Indian democracy has been under ‘systematic and dangerous’ five-fold assault over the past 11 years (since 2014) — a period it described as an ‘Undeclared Emergency@11’.

This comes after the Bhartiya Janata Party went all-out on the grand old party on the 50th anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency by the then Indira Gandhi-led government. PM Modi said no Indian will ever forget the manner in which the spirit of the Constitution was violated and the Parliament was muzzled.

Jairam Ramesh cited alleged ‘attacks on the Constitution, tax terrorism and Intimidation of Businesses and institutions, control Over the Media and misuse of investigative agencies’ to claim that an ‘undeclared emergency’ was in place.

Claiming that attacks were being launched on the Constitution, Ramesh claimed that during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the prime minister sought a '400 Paar' mandate for a new Constitution and to betray Babasaheb Ambedkar's legacy. Ramesh alleged that the government was weakening Parliament and eroding the autonomy of Constitutional bodies. He further alleged the Centre had damaged federalism, using money power to topple opposition-led state governments and misusing Governors to block state bills and interfere in universities.

Jairam Ramesh said that the Right to Information Act has been hollowed out, and agencies like the ED, CBI, and IT Department are being misused to target the Opposition. He also alleged the BJP collected Rs 8,000 crore through electoral bonds using these agencies as leverage.
