Opposition walks out of RS over demand for Bihar electoral rolls discussion
Aug-18-2025

Opposition MPs walked out of the Rajya Sabha (RS), demanding a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar.

When the House reconvened at 2 pm, BJD's Sasmit Patra, who was in the Chair, announced that the Business Advisory Committee had allocated three hours for discussion on the Indian Ports Bill, 2025 and one hour on the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2025. Following the announcement, Patra asked Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister to introduce the Indian Ports Bill, 2025. Sonowal then introduced the bill amid the din.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge stood up, joined by other Opposition members, to demand a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. However, the Chair declined to take up the matter, which led to noisy protests by the Opposition members. They raised slogans demanding a discussion, and subsequently staged a walkout in the House.

Earlier today, the Upper House adjourned till 2 pm after Opposition members protested after Deputy Chairman Harivansh refused all notices under Rule 267 demanding a discussion on various issues.
