Hope SC sets deadline for restoration of statehood to J-K': Omar Abdullah
Aug-25-2025

Jammu and Kashmir’s former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed optimism that the Supreme Court (SC) of India will set a timeline for the restoration of statehood to J&K after the next hearing scheduled for October 10. The apex court refused to advance the date of hearing on pleas seeking restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, saying the matter is already listed on October 10.

Talking to reporters in Srinagar, CM Omar said, ‘It is unfortunate that the Supreme Court is not ready to hear this matter (statehood restoration) before October 10. We hope that when it comes up, the Court will impose a time limit and we will get statehood back soon.’

CM Omar said that the government led by him wants the early hearing of the case. He said, ‘I do not know who went to the Supreme Court for an urgent hearing. We also want there should be no delay in this decision’. He said his government has been after the restoration of statehood for the last ten months since the it took over.

Omar Abdullah stated that the first cabinet meeting of their government had also been about statehood restoration and they had passed the resolution as well. CM added that the first meeting he had with the Prime Minister was also about the resolution of statehood restoration.

Reacting to Mehbooba Mufti’s protest over the condition of Kashmiri prisoners, Omar stated that there was nothing wrong in the protest, but the decisions on the matters of security are taken in Delhi. He added,’ ‘If they (PDP) are doing it just for a show, then let them do it. No one will have any objection to it’. The CM further informed that there was no dearth of schemes in J&K.
