Former Union minister and senior Assam BJP leader Rajen Gohain, 17 members resign from BJP
Oct-09-2025

Former Union minister and four-time BJP MP Rajen Gohain resigned from the BJP, along with 17 other members in Assam.

Rajen Gohain submitted his resignation at Bajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati, the state BJP headquarters. In a letter to state BJP president Dilip Saikia, Gohain said he was resigning from the primary membership of the party and stepping down from all party responsibilities with immediate effect. Seventeen other BJP members, mostly from Upper and Central Assam, also submitted their resignations to Saikia.

Gohain said he resigned as the party had failed ‘to fulfil the promises made to the people of Assam and betrayed the indigenous communities by allowing outsiders to settle in the state.’ He alleged the government, which promised that after May 16, 2014, there would not be a single Bangladeshi in Assam, is continuously bringing in Bangladeshis through new tactics. Gohain further accused the state government of promoting nepotism and adopting policies that stifle local businesses.

Gohain represented Nowgong Lok Sabha constituency from 1999 to 2019 and served as Minister of State for Railways in 2016. His exit comes ahead of the Assam Assembly elections and is seen as a major blow to the BJP, as he was one of the principal architects of the party’s growth in the state.
