Indices maintain gains in late morning deals
Dec-22-2025

Domestic equity indices maintained their gains and were trading higher by over half percent in late morning deals as market participants indulged in enlarging their positions. Hectic buying in Infosys, Trent, Bharti Airtel, Tech Mahindra and HCL Technologies companies’ stocks helped the markets to trade above their crucial 85,400 (Sensex) and 26,100 (Nifty) levels. Meanwhile, the session was jubilant for broader indices, with BSE Mid cap index and Small cap index gaining in the range of 0.80-1.00%. Positive cues from the global markets supported domestic sentiments. There were encouragements in markets as Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia expressed confidence that India will surpass Germany to become the world's third-largest economy by the end of 2027, lauding the polices and institutional reforms ushered in by the Centre under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. All the BSE sectoral indices were trading in green led by TECK, IT, Metal, Capital Goods and Industrials.

On the global front, Asian markets were trading higher as investors parsed China’s central bank’s decision to keep its loan prime rates steady. The People’s Bank of China kept its 1-year and 5-year loan prime rates unchanged at 3% and 3.5% respectively, holding them for a seventh straight meeting. The one-year rate influences most new and outstanding loans, while the five-year benchmark affects mortgages. Back home, in the stock specific development, Jupiter Wagons surged after the company’s promoter bought an additional stake. Its promoter, Tatravagonka A.S., had acquired additional equity shares through the conversion of convertible warrants.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 85404.69, up by 475.33 points or 0.56% after trading in a range of 85145.86 and 85461.19. There were 23 stocks advancing against 6 stocks declining, while 1 stock remained unchanged on the index.

Meanwhile, the Indian Biogas Association (IBA) has said that the biogas sector in India is likely to attract over Rs 5,000 crore investments during the financial year 2026-27, driven by growing compressed biogas (CBG) pipeline and strong interest from investors and stakeholders this calendar year (2025). As of now, over 100 CBG plants have been commissioned in India.

Citing government data, the association said 94 CBG plants sold more than 31,400 tonne of CBG during FY25, which is a tangible proof of growth, and market uptake. It said there is also ample scope for efficiency improvement and capacity utilization in the several million small-scale traditional biogas digesters, and the country programs are scaling up support for the various medium-sized plants which offer the benefits of cleaner cooking fuel, rural employment and organic manure. Looking ahead, the IBA expects significant commissioning of CBG facilities, effective and organized supply chains for feedstock, and unified and integrated policy frameworks to support the rapid adoption of biogas.

IBA Chairman, Gaurav Kedia, has said ‘the relaxed GST regime is going to augur ease of doing business in the CBG ecosystem. We anticipate that a reduction of 7 per cent in the applicable GST rate for CBG sector shall significantly improve project viability, and the direct impact would translate into 4-5 per cent increase in new investments in the industry over the short to medium term.’ He also said indirectly across the industry value chain, the multiplier effect would be much larger. He added that the CBG industry is projected to reach a size of $3-4 billion by 2026 and grow further to around $5 billion by 2030.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 26123.55, up by 157.15 points or 0.61% after trading in a range of 26047.80 and 26148.15. There were 39 stocks advancing against 11 stocks declining on the index.
