Benchmarks remain flat in late morning deals

Indian equity markets remained flat in late morning deals ahead of Nifty’s weekly F&O series expiry later in the day. Traders were cautious after US President Donald Trump announced that Washington would impose a 25 per cent tariff on countries trading with Iran. India, along with China, is expected to be among the most affected, as it is one of Iran’s largest trading partners.  According to the Indian Embassy in Tehran, India is among Tehran's top five trade partners.  Further, rising crude oil prices in international markets also weighed on the domestic sentiments. On the BSE sectoral front, traders were seen piling up positions in Metal, Basic Materials, IT, Bankex and PSU, while selling was witnessed in Realty, Telecom, Industrials, Healthcare and Auto.

On the global front, Asian markets were trading mostly in green following positive cues from the US markets overnight. Back home, in the stock specific development, GTPL Hathway surged on reporting 8% rise in Q3 consolidated net profit.      

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 83855.96, down by 22.21 points or 0.03% after trading in a range of 83578.56 and 84258.03. There were 12 stocks advancing against 18 stocks declining on the index.

The broader indices were trading mixed; the BSE Mid cap index was down by 0.22%, while Small cap index up by 0.46%.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Metal up by 1.04%, Basic Materials up by 0.67%, IT up by 0.30%, Bankex up by 0.19% and PSU up by 0.17%, while Realty down by 1.05%, Telecom down by 0.69%, Industrials down by 0.66%, Healthcare down by 0.45% and Auto down by 0.41% were the top losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were Eternal up by 2.93%, Tech Mahindra up by 1.46%, ICICI Bank up by 1.44%, SBI up by 0.96% and HDFC Bank up by 0.85%. On the flip side, Larsen & Toubro down by 1.88%, Interglobe Aviation down by 1.69%, Trent down by 1.32%, Reliance Industries down by 1.07% and Bharti Airtel down by 0.81% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, the Income Tax Department has said that Net direct tax collection grew 8.82 per cent to over Rs 18.38 lakh crore between April 1, 2025 and January 11, 2026 period, as compared with Rs 16.89 lakh crore collected during the same period last year. During the periods, the corporate tax (CT) collection recorded a growth of 12.37% to around Rs 8.63 lakh crore as compared to around Rs 7.68 lakh crore in same period last year.  

Further, the data showed the non - corporate tax collection (NCT) grew 6.41% to around Rs 9.30 lakh crore in April to January period as compared to around Rs 8.74 lakh crore in same period last year. The collection of Securities Transaction Tax (STT) stood at Rs 44,867 crore between April 1 and January 11, registering a flat growth compared to the same period last year. Refunds dropped 17 per cent to Rs 3.12 lakh crore during the period.

Gross direct tax collection increased 4.14 per cent to about Rs 21.50 lakh crore till January 11 of this fiscal as compared to Rs 20.64 lakh crore in same period last year.  This includes gross corporate tax and non-corporate tax collection of Rs 10.47 lakh crore and Rs 10.58 lakh crore, respectively. In the current fiscal (FY26), the government has projected its direct tax collection at Rs 25.20 lakh crore, up 12.7 per cent year-on-year. The government aims to collect Rs 78,000 crore from STT in FY26.  

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 25781.25, down by 9.00 points or 0.03% after trading in a range of 25700.85 and 25899.80. There were 21 stocks advancing against 29 stocks declining on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were Eternal up by 3.00%, ONGC up by 1.83%, Hindalco up by 1.67%, Tech Mahindra up by 1.53% and ICICI Bank up by 1.36%. On the flip side, Larsen & Toubro down by 2.33%, Interglobe Aviation down by 1.51%, JIO Financial down by 1.32%, Trent down by 1.29% and Cipla down by 1.21% were the top losers.

Asian markets were trading mostly in green; Nikkei 225 surged 1677.11 points or 3.23% to 53,617.00, Taiwan Weighted added 139.93 points or 0.46% to 30,707.22, KOSPI increased 65.09 points or 1.39% to 4,689.88, Hang Seng advanced 279.52 points or 1.05% to 26,888.00 and Straits Times rose 20.33 points or 0.43% to 4,787.11. However, Jakarta Composite plunged 0.1 points to 8,884.62 and Shanghai Composite weakened 2.9 points or 0.07% to 4,162.39.
