India-US reiterate commitment to conclude mutually beneficial trade agreement

Aiming to strengthens bilateral trade and economic ties, the India and the United States (US) have reaffirmed their commitment to conclude a mutually beneficial trade agreement (BTA). The Chief negotiators of the two countries concluded the four-day talks which scheduled from June 1 to June 4, 2026 in India. The Indian commerce ministry referred the talks as constructive and positive.

The talks covered wide range of issues, covering trade in goods, non-tariff measures, customs and trade facilitation, economic security alignment and other areas of mutual interest. The discussions were part of finalization of the first phase of the bilateral trade agreement between the countries. India and US had finalized framework of the first phase of the BTA or an interim trade agreement in February 7, 2026.

In 2025-2026, the US was the second largest trading partner of India. During the period, the India’s exports to the US grew marginally by 0.92% to $87.3 billion during the last fiscal year. Further, India’s imports from US have increased 15.95% to $52.9 billion in 2025-2026. The country’s trade surplus with US declined to $34.4 billion in 2025-26 from $40.89 billion in 2024-25.
