Markets remain in deep red in late morning deals

Indian equity markets remained in deep red in late morning deals amid selling by funds and retail investors. Hectic selling in Infosys, TCS, Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies, and HDFC Bank dragged both the Sensex and Nifty below their psychological 76,600 and 23,950 levels, respectively. Sentiments were further weighed down by weakness in the rupee, which fell by 10 paise to 94.50 against the US dollar due to fresh demand for the US currency from banks and importers. On the BSE sectoral front, traders were seen piling up positions in Telecom, Power, Capital Goods, Utilities and Healthcare, while selling was witnessed IT, TECK, Realty, Oil & Gas and Auto. 

On the global front, Asian markets were trading in red as postponed U.S.-Iran talks tempered optimism over ceasefire progress. Switzerland’s foreign ministry reportedly said U.S.-Iran talks scheduled to take place at Burgenstock on Friday would not proceed as planned. Back home, in the stock specific development, Waaree Renewable Technologies gained as the company acquired 55% equity shares of Associated Power Structures (APSPL) pursuant to the allotment of shares under the primary acquisition and transfer of shares under the secondary acquisition.  

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 76578.92, down by 831.06 points or 1.07% after trading in a range of 76557.31 and 76858.80. There were 8 stocks advancing against 22 stocks declining on the index.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Telecom up by 1.38%, Power up by 0.77%, Capital Goods up by 0.60%, Utilities up by 0.38% and Healthcare up by 0.36%, while IT down by 5.07%, TECK down by 3.06%, Realty down by 0.98%, Oil & Gas down by 0.84% and Auto down by 0.78% were the top losing indices on BSE.

The top top gainers on the Sensex were NTPC up by 1.35%, Bharti Airtel up by 0.97%, Titan up by 0.70%, Sun Pharma up by 0.46% and Bajaj Finance up by 0.41%. On the flip side, Infosys down by 7.86%, TCS down by 5.82%, Tech Mahindra down by 4.62%, HCL Technologies down by 3.90% and HDFC Bank down by 2.49% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, data released by the Income Tax Department has showed that India’s net income tax collection increased 14.64 per cent year-on-year to over Rs 5.21 lakh crore during the April 1-June 17 period of this fiscal (FY27) as compared with Rs 4.54 lakh crore collected in the corresponding period last year. The increase was primarily driven by strong growth in both corporate and non-corporate tax receipts.   

On a net basis, corporate tax collection rose 22 per cent to Rs 2.08 lakh crore as of June 17 as compared to Rs 1.70 lakh crore in the same period a year earlier. Net non-corporate tax collections, which include taxes paid by individuals, firms, HUFs and other entities, increased 8.4 per cent to Rs 2.94 lakh crore so far this fiscal year from Rs 2.71 crore in the year ago period. Tax refunds issued during the period stood at Rs 89,026 crore, registering a modest increase of 1.19 per cent over Rs 87,979 crore refunded in the corresponding period last year.  

On a gross basis, direct tax collection rose 12.46 per cent to over Rs 6.10 lakh crore till June 17, against Rs 5.42 lakh crore a year ago. Gross corporate tax collections stood at Rs 2.77 lakh crore, while non-corporate tax receipts were Rs 3.15 lakh crore. The government's direct tax collection target is set at Rs 26.97 lakh crore for FY27, representing a 15 per cent growth rate over the Rs 23.40 lakh crore collected in FY26.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 23947.90, down by 220.10 points or 0.91% after trading in a range of 23936.25 and 24011.50. There were 16 stocks advancing against 34 stocks declining on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were NTPC up by 1.31%, Bharti Airtel up by 1.02%, Bajaj Finance up by 0.67%, Titan up by 0.67% and JIO Financial up by 0.50%. On the flip side, Infosys down by 7.86%, TCS down by 5.75%, Tech Mahindra down by 4.66%, HCL Technologies down by 3.80% and Wipro down by 2.98% were the top losers. 

All Asian markets were trading lower; Nikkei 225 slipped 15.49 points or 0.02% to 71,038.00, Jakarta Composite plunged 45.02 points or 0.73% to 6,127.32, KOSPI dropped 16.68 points or 0.18% to 9,047.16 and Straits Times fell 48.98 points or 0.94% to 5,163.86.
