India should continue to base energy policy on national interest, energy security: GTRI
Jul-16-2026

The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) has said that India should continue to base its energy policy on national interest and energy security, as imports of Russian oil have played a key role in containing inflation and ensuring stable energy supplies. Commenting on the proposed US tariffs targeting countries purchasing Russian oil, it said that the odds of this bill becoming law-and being enforced-appear low.

GTRI said a bipartisan group of 26 US senators - 13 Republicans and 13 Democrats - has introduced a revised Russia sanctions bill that proposes tariffs of up to 100 per cent on imports from India, China, Slovakia, Hungary and Azerbaijan over their purchases of Russian oil.

GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said that India has little reason for concern as the original version of the bill remained pending in the US Senate for more than 15 months without any legislative action, indicating limited congressional support for such extensive tariff measures. He further said the revised proposal could face a similar outcome. The bill's prospects have also been weakened by recent US Supreme Court rulings that struck down the reciprocal tariff regime and Section 122 tariffs, highlighting the legal constraints on imposing tariffs outside the framework of established US trade laws.
