India needs 86,440 MW additional thermal power generation capacity by FY36: Shripad Naik
Jul-28-2026

The Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik has said that India needs to add 86,440 megawatt (MW) of thermal power generation capacity by FY36, of which 63,545 MW is already at various stages of implementation.

Citing the National Generation Adequacy Plan (2026-27 to 2035-36) prepared by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) in March 2026, the minister said the country will require around 3,15,000 MW of coal- and lignite-based thermal capacity by 2035-36 to meet the projected electricity demand. Against this requirement, the installed coal and lignite-based capacity stood at 2,28,560 MW as of March 31, 2026. To bridge the gap, he said the minimum additional thermal capacity required is estimated at around 86,440 MW. During FY27 (up to June 2026), 2,260 MW of thermal capacity has already been commissioned. Besides this, 47,545 MW is under construction, while another 16,000 MW has been awarded and is due for construction.

The minister further said the country has been able to meet electricity demand with adequate power availability, with only a marginal gap in both energy supply and peak demand. During FY27 (up to June 2026), India recorded a highest peak demand of 2,70,832 MW, against which 2,70,820 MW of power was supplied.
