Government to divest 6.5% stake in LIC through Rs 31,409 crore OFS

The government of India is all set to divest 6.5% stake in Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) through an Offer for Sale (OFS) worth around Rs 31,409.94 crore. The government launched OFS for sale of 31,62,49,885 shares (Base offer), representing 2.5% of total shareholding, of LIC for around Rs 12,080.75 crore. The floor price for the OFS is Rs 382 per share. Further, the OFS has a green shoe option for an additional 4% stake, representing 50,59,99,816 shares, of the company. The offer has opened for Non-Retail Investors on August 04, 2026 and will open for Retail Investors on August 05, 2026.

The government holds 96.5% stake in the company. The stake sale will help the company achieve the minimum public shareholding requirement mandated by market regulator SEBI ahead of schedule. 

Earlier, SEBI had given the company time till May 16, 2027, to achieve a minimum 10% public shareholding.
