Key gauges continue to trade lower in morning deals
Aug-25-2026

Indian equity benchmarks added some losses in morning deals, weighed down by a tech-driven selloff on Wall Street, escalating US-Iran tensions and cautious sentiment ahead of Nvidia's earnings. Separately, the commerce ministry said India and Cambodia have completed negotiations for a bilateral investment treaty (BIT) and have agreed to sign it at the earliest. They also discussed ways to increase cooperation in sectors such as agriculture, dyes and pigments, banking and insurance sectors with a view to boosting economic ties.

Both Sensex and Nifty remained in the red during morning deals, with broad-based selling in heavyweight stocks. Metal stocks were the weakest, followed by Capital Goods and IT counters. However, gains in Telecom stocks helped cushion the decline. Traders overlooked exchange data showed Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) turned net buyers on August 24, 2026, purchasing equities worth Rs 1,181.66 crore.

On the global front, Asian markets were trading mixed following the mixed cues from Wall Street overnight, with South Korean markets leading regional declines amid weakness in semiconductor stocks on concerns about heavy spending over artificial intelligence.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 77136.36, down by 232.75 points or 0.30% after trading in a range of 77125.91 and 77390.72. There were 4 stocks advancing against 26 stocks declining on the index.

Meanwhile, Union Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister J P Nadda has underlined the need to increase the size of the chemicals sector to $1 trillion by 2040, and said that the government is focused on fostering an ecosystem to boost investments for increasing domestic manufacturing capabilities. On August 24, 2026, Nadda chaired a CEO roundtable to deliberate on India’s ambition of building a $1 trillion Chemicals sector by 2040.

The roundtable was attended by more than 100 delegates from the chemical industry from across the world. He stated the government is committed to establishing a continuous and institutionalised dialogue mechanism with the industry to identify challenges and ensure that suggestions are translated into time-bound action. He said that it would require sustained investment, technology development, and stronger domestic manufacturing capabilities.

Moreover, he said that the government continues to focus on creating an enabling ecosystem for investment, innovation, sustainability and long-term growth. He assured that concerns raised by the industry are duly noted and would be suitably taken up with ministries concerned.
