Indian equity benchmarks erased their intraday losses and settled higher on Tuesday, supported by a decline in crude oil prices and positive cues from other Asian markets. Markets made a cautious start and traded below the neutral lines amid heightened geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and Iran. Meanwhile, IT stocks remained in focus following reports that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) proposed a $103,265 fee for H-1B cap-subject petitions.

Both the Sensex and Nifty closed near their day’s highs, buoyed by broad-based buying across sectors. Also, renewed buying by FIIs strengthened sentiments. The Nifty witnessed some volatility on the first monthly derivatives expiry under the new closing-auction system. Sentiments remained upbeat as Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said India recorded 7.7 per cent growth last year despite global uncertainties and is working towards becoming a $30 trillion economy by 2047. 

Some of the important factors in trade:

FIIs turns net buyers: Sentiments remained upbeat as exchange data showed Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) turned net buyers on August 24, 2026, purchasing equities worth Rs 1,181.66 crore.

EAM Jaishankar holds talks with Russian counterpart Lavrov on bilateral, global issues: Traders took note of report that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held wide-ranging talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, with the two leaders discussing bilateral cooperation, global challenges and multilateral issues.

On the global front: European markets were trading mostly in green, as investor sentiment improved and the recent sell-off in global technology stocks eased. Asian markets ended mostly higher, despite largely weak cues from the US markets overnight.

The BSE Sensex ended at 77656.09, up by 286.98 points or 0.37% after trading in a range of 77125.91 and 77666.39. There were 21 stocks advancing against 9 stocks declining on the index. (Provisional)

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Telecom up by 1.39%, Consumer Durables up by 0.81%, Healthcare up by 0.65%, TECK up by 0.56%, and Metal up by 0.43%, while there were losing sectoral indices on the BSE (Provisional)

The top gainers on the Sensex were Interglobe Aviation up by 1.95%, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone up by 1.22%, Trent up by 0.90%, Larsen & Toubro up by 0.87% and Titan Company up by 0.86%. On the flip side, HCL Technologies down by 1.00%, Tata Steel down by 0.81%, HDFC Bank down by 0.69%, Power Grid Corporation of India down by 0.37% and Hindustan Unilever down by 0.30% were the top losers. Meanwhile, with a view to boosting economic ties, the Commerce Ministry said India and Cambodia have completed negotiations for a bilateral investment treaty (BIT) and agreed to sign it at the earliest. The two sides also discussed ways to enhance cooperation in sectors such as agriculture, dyes and pigments, banking and insurance. The issues were discussed during the India-Cambodia Joint Working Group on Trade and Investment (JWGTI) meeting in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The treaty seeks to protect and promote bilateral investments. The two sides also discussed cooperation in agriculture, market access, expanding trade in dyes and pigments, and cooperation in the banking and insurance sectors. The meeting was co-chaired by Amit Verma, Joint Secretary, Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, and Long Kemvichet, Director General of International Trade, Ministry of Commerce, Cambodia.

The meeting deliberated on ways to diversify and deepen bilateral trade, including through cooperation in traditional medicine, e-governance modules, recognition of the Indian Pharmacopoeia, reconciliation of trade statistics, and sharing information on flagship trade fairs and business delegations. Meanwhile, India received $51 million in foreign direct investment (FDI) from Cambodia between April 2000 and March 2026.

The CNX Nifty ended at 24334.55, up by 115.50 points or 0.48% after trading in a range of 24115.45 and 24334.55. There were 34 stocks advancing against 16 stocks declining on the index. (Provisional)

The top gainers on Nifty were Adani Enterprises up by 3.72%, Max Healthcare up by 2.57%, Apollo Hospital up by 2.15%, Interglobe Aviation up by 2.01% and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone up by 1.83%. On the flip side, HDFC Life Insurance down by 1.13%, Cipla down by 1.11%, ONGC down by 1.08%, Coal India down by 0.71% and Hindalco Industries down by 0.70% were the top losers. (Provisional)

European markets were trading higher; Germany’s DAX gained 225.4 points or 0.86% to 26,332.00, France’s CAC rose 38.99 points or 0.46% to 8,492.00 and UK’s FTSE 100 increased 12.79 points or 0.12% to 10,867.11.

Asian markets settled mostly higher on Tuesday as Tech stocks rebound ahead of Nvidia earnings. Investors also awaited the release of US consumer confidence data due Tuesday, followed by the latest personal consumption expenditure price index on Wednesday. Besides, market participants overlooked the US sanctions on Iran and its trading partners in an effort to pressure Tehran back to the negotiating table. China’s Shanghai Composite index gained ahead of the National People's Congress Standing Committee meeting, which is scheduled from August 25 to August 28. Meanwhile, Indonesian and Malaysian markets were remained closed on account of public holiday.
