Indices remain mixed in late morning deals
Aug-26-2026

Domestic equity indices remained mixed in late morning deals despite positive cues from global markets. Traders were cautious after a private report said that Indian economic growth slowed slightly to 7.1% in the April–June quarter from a better-than-expected 7.8% in the previous quarter, amid more subdued private investment. However, there was some respite in the markets as crude oil prices dropped amid easing concerns about military conflict, as the U.S. leans toward economic sanctions to pressure Iran.

Sensex was trading marginally higher on account of buying in banking stocks such as ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Axis Bank, while Nifty was trading slightly in the red due to selling in telecom and IT stocks, namely Bharti Airtel and Infosys. On the global front, Asian markets were trading mostly in the green, following positive cues from the U.S. market overnight.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 77732.44, up by 76.35 points or 0.10% after trading in a range of 77701.18 and 77986.84. There were 15 stocks advancing against 15 stocks declining on the index.

Meanwhile, former Chief Economic Adviser (CEA) Krishnamurthy V Subramanian has said that India can achieve a $55 trillion economy by 2047 by leveraging its young demographic in artificial intelligence (AI) and strengthening its presence in key sunrise sectors. He noted that sustained real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth of 8 per cent along with strategic capital deployment could generate significant compounding gains across the country’s core economic pillars.

He described the $55 trillion target for a ‘Viksit Bharat’ as achievable, driven by the power of compounding growth, ethical wealth creation and structural policy reforms. He also emphasised the importance of attracting high-quality Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), expanding world-class electronics and industrial manufacturing under global value chain integrations, and developing a highly skilled young workforce proficient in AI.

He said ‘by expanding high-value manufacturing, harnessing our vast young demographic in AI and emerging capabilities, and establishing global dominance in sunrise sectors like space and defence tech, India is not merely expanding its economic footprint -- it is delivering a resilient economic blueprint for the modern world.’ He also spoke about India's strategic leap into high-barrier frontier industries -- specifically defence manufacturing, dual-use technology transfer, and commercial space tech -- as vital catalysts for technological self-reliance, national defence capabilities, and high-value export growth.
