Post Session: Quick Review
Sep-07-2026

Indian markets started the session in red on Monday and magnified their losses to end near day’s lows as fresh escalation in the US-Iran conflict pushed oil prices higher, raising concerns over inflation outlook. Crude oil prices surged as tit-for-tat strikes between the U.S. and Iran on vessels sailing in the Strait of Hormuz and other areas heightened concerns of a prolonged supply disruption from the Middle East.

Both Sensex and Nifty ended with cut of 0.50% each due to selling pressure in IT, metal and Teck stocks. IT stocks led the losers after stronger-than-expected US jobs data strengthened expectations of a Federal Reserve rate hike in September. Higher U.S. rates could curb client spending, weighing on Indian IT firms that generate a significant share of their revenue from the United States.

Some of the important factors in trade:

Foreign fund outflows: Sentiments remained downbeat as Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained net sellers on September 4, 2026, with a net outflow of Rs 3,111.94 crore.

RBI mops up Rs 6.02 lakh crore thorough two VRRR auction: Traders overlooked report that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has absorbed over Rs 6.02 lakh crore from the banking system through two variable rate reverse repo (VRRR) auctions as surplus liquidity remained at a record high.

Select auto stocks remain in focus: Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) said that the Automobile retail sales in India increased by 17.51% to a record 24,23,201 units in August 2026 from 20,62,038 units in the same period last year. FADA has attributed the growth in retail sales to continued momentum of GST 2.0.

On the global front: European markets were trading mostly in green as Eurozone economy expanded 0.6% in Q2 2026, revised up from initial estimates of 0.4%. Asian markets ended mixed, driven by optimism that a new OpenAI model will spur demand for memory chips.

The BSE Sensex ended at 76132.81, down by 382.62 points or 0.50% after trading in a range of 75970.52 and 76477.19. There were 5 stocks advancing against 25 stocks declining on the index. (Provisional)

Meanwhile, in a move aimed at improving the reliability and availability of clean sources of power, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), under the power ministry, has proposed making energy storage systems mandatory for future renewable energy projects. In this regard, the authority released the Draft Central Electricity Authority (Technical Standards for Construction of Electric Plants and Electric Lines) 2nd Amendment, Regulations, 2026.

Under the draft regulations issued by the CEA, renewable energy power plants commissioned after July 1, 2027 would require to have at least 15 per cent of their inverter equipped with grid forming control and all Power Conversion Systems (PCS) of battery energy storage system would need to have grid-forming capability to comply with the technical requirements. The draft also states that ground-mounted solar power plant and on-shore wind power plant which are commissioned after July 1, 2027 shall be equipped with co-located Energy Storage System (ESS) having a minimum storage duration of two hours and a capacity equivalent to at least 10 per cent of the installed capacity of the plant.

Also, ground-mounted solar power plant and on-shore wind power plant which are commissioned after July 1, 2029 and up to June 30, 2031 shall be equipped with co-located ESS having a minimum storage duration of 4 hours and a capacity equivalent to at least 10 per cent of the installed capacity of the plant. The draft also said that any change in the percentage of requirement of grid forming capabilities or ESS capacity shall be notified by CEA from time to time. The proposals come as India pursues its target of 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.

The CNX Nifty ended at 23779.15, down by 118.55 points or 0.50% after trading in a range of 23737.90 and 23890.00. There were 13 stocks advancing against 37 stocks declining on the index. (Provisional)

(Provisional)

European markets were trading mostly in green; UK’s FTSE 100 rose 20.02 points or 0.18% to 10,851.11 and France’s CAC was up by 8.53 points or 0.1% to 8,287.30, while Germany’s DAX lost 73 points or 0.28% to 25,973.40.

Asian markets ended mixed on Monday, as investors cautiously watched the situation in the Middle East after the US and Iran exchanged fire in the contested waters of the Strait of Hormuz over the weekend, fuelling concerns over prolonged disruption to energy supplies. Besides, expectations of an interest-rate hike at the upcoming Federal Reserve policy meeting after a stronger-than-expected August US nonfarm payrolls report kept market under pressure. Meanwhile, South Korea’s Kospi gained more than 4%, led by a sharp rebound in semiconductor shares as OpenAI’s release of its next-generation large language model GPT-6 Astra revived expectations for stronger spending on AI infrastructure.
