Key gauges remain in red in morning deals
Sep-09-2026

Indian equity benchmarks continued to trade lower in morning deals, as escalating tensions in West Asia pushed crude oil to near $100-per-barrel mark. Traders remained cautious as Crisil Ratings’ report stated that Rainfall Distortion Index (RDI) records a deficiency score of 14.4 as of September 4, 2026 making this the most spatially distorted monsoon in a decade. In the same period last year RDI recorded a surplus score of 18.7. Crisil’s RDI confirms a highly uneven spatial distribution of rainfall across kharif-growing regions, making this the most distorted monsoon in a decade.

Both Sensex and Nifty remained in the red during morning deals weighed down by selling pressure in IT, TECK and Realty stocks. Fresh foreign fund outflows also dented investors' sentiment. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 123.19 crore on Tuesday. On the global front, Asian markets were trading mixed following the broadly negative cues from Wall Street overnight, as traders continue to fret over persistently high crude oil prices and escalating Middle East hostilities, which is stoking global inflation risks and rate-hike fears.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 75109.50, down by 468.08 points or 0.62% after trading in a range of 74923.08 and 75220.88. There were 9 stocks advancing against 21 stocks declining on the index.

Meanwhile, ahead of bi-monthly monetary policy meeting, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has launched three key surveys to gauge inflation expectations and consumer confidence in India and gather key inputs for its monetary policy. The next bi-monthly monetary policy is scheduled to be announced on October 7, 2026. The September round of the Inflation Expectations Survey of Households (IESH) is aimed at capturing subjective assessments on price movements and inflation, based on individual consumption baskets, across 19 cities.

The Urban Consumer Confidence Survey (UCCS) seeks qualitative responses from households about their sentiments on the general economic situation, employment scenario, price level, households' income and spending. This study too will be conducted across 19 cities.

The central bank also announced the launch of the Rural Consumer Confidence Survey (RCCS). It is aimed at collecting current perceptions and one-year-ahead expectations of households on the general economic situation, employment scenario, overall price situation, own income and spending in the rural and semi-urban areas across 31 states/UTs.

The 19 cities are Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi and Thiruvananthapuram. The RBI said the results of the surveys will provide useful inputs for the monetary policy.
