Post Session: Quick Review
Sep-09-2026

Indian equity benchmarks ended their range-bound trade deeply in the red on Wednesday, extending losses for the third straight day, as Brent crude prices continued to rise, with no signs of a truce in West Asia. Brent crude oil futures topped the $100-per-barrel mark, posing a significant macro headwind for India. Fresh attacks and the US response have heightened concerns over the security of key energy shipping routes. Meanwhile, liquidity shifting towards IPOs also weighed on investor sentiment.

Sensex and Nifty ended lower, with a divergent trend, as the Sensex underperformed the Nifty, declining by more than a percent. The Nifty fell below the 23,500 level, declining 0.86%. A sell-off in IT and tech counters weighted on market sentiments. Some caution also prevailed amid foreign fund outflows. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) turned net sellers on September 8, offloading Indian equities worth over Rs 123 crore. However, buying was visible in metal stocks, with Tata Steel gaining more than 2%.

Some of the important factors in trade:

Weak monsoon raises fresh risks for rabi crops: Traders were concerned as Crisil Ratings said that Rainfall Distortion Index (RDI) records a deficiency score of 14.4 as of September 4, 2026 making this the most spatially distorted monsoon in a decade. Crisil’s RDI confirms a highly uneven spatial distribution of rainfall across kharif-growing regions, making this the most distorted monsoon in a decade.

Food Ministry, FCI sign MoU to boost foodgrain management, operational efficiency: The Department of Food & Public Distribution (DFPD) and the Food Corporation of India (FCI) have signed a MoU for the Financial Year 2026-27, aimed at improving operational efficiency, strengthening accountability and accelerating the modernisation of the country’s foodgrain management system.

Power stocks remain in focus: Union Coal Minister G Kishan Reddy has assured that there is no need to worry about the coal stocks for power plants. He added that India has 123 million tonnes of coal available which is (sufficient) for 51 days (reserve) in the country.

Global cues remained weak: European markets were trading in the red, while Asian markets ended mixed as an escalation in US-Iran tensions lifted oil prices and weighed on sentiment. Investors also remained on the sidelines ahead of Thursday’s European Central Bank policy meeting.

The BSE Sensex ended at 74764.23, down by 813.35 points or 1.08% after trading in a range of 74764.23 and 75251.23. There were 6 stocks advancing against 24 stocks declining on the index. (Provisional)

Meanwhile, Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) has said that India’s electric vehicle (EV) retail sales increased 52.9 per cent year-on-year to 2,98,448 units in August 2026. It said overall EV market penetration expanded to 12.3 per cent during the month, up from 9.5 per cent in August 2025.

FADA said the two-wheeler segment led the growth, with retail sales rising 67.05 per cent to 1,83,204 units in August 2026 from 1,09,673 units a year earlier. Electric passenger vehicle (PV) retail sales were up 51.88 per cent at 30,696 units in August 2026 as against 20,210 units in August 2025.

It said electric three-wheeler sales also registered strong growth of 25.28 per cent, rising to 79,846 units in August 2026 from 63,736 units in the corresponding month last year. Electric commercial vehicle (CV) retail sales almost tripled at 4,702 units in August 2026 from 1,631 units in August 2025.

The CNX Nifty ended at 23431.50, down by 203.60 points or 0.86% after trading in a range of 23431.50 and 23571.55. There were 13 stocks advancing against 36 stocks declining on the index. (Provisional)

Asian markets ended mixed on Wednesday ahead of US inflation data due later in the week which could offer additional clues on the Federal Reserve's interest rate trajectory. Investors also remained cautious as the Middle East conflict escalated and Brent crude prices surged above $100 per barrel following Houthi attacks on Saudi infrastructure and continuing strikes in the Strait of Hormuz. Japanese markets declined as the Japanese yen extended its rally to hit its highest level against the US dollar in nearly seven months. However, Chinese markets rose after data showed China's consumer-price index rose 0.8% in August from a year earlier, versus a 0.5% increase in July, while producer prices rose 3.8% year-on-year, up from a 3.5% increase in July driven partly by higher food and energy costs. Further, South Korea’s KOSPI traded higher amid renewed strength in semiconductor and AI-related shares.
