Sensex, Nifty trade flat in early deals on Thursday
Sep-10-2026

Indian equity benchmarks made a cautious start on Thursday and were hovering near the neutral lines, as crude oil prices above the $100-per-barrel mark, amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and concerns over disruptions to oil supplies, continued to weigh on investor sentiment. A sustained rise in oil prices could increase India’s import bill, add to inflationary pressures and put pressure on economic growth and corporate earnings.

The Sensex and Nifty were trading flat in early trade, with the Sensex gaining just 5.80 points, while the Nifty declined 8.90 points. Buying interest in IT and TECK stocks, following the previous session’s sharp sell-off, was offset by selling in Auto and Capital Goods stocks. Foreign fund outflows also kept sentiment subdued. Provisional exchange data showed that foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) were net sellers of Indian equities worth Rs 582.99 crore on September 9.

Global cues remained subdued, with all the Asian markets trading lower tracking overnight losses on Wall Street. Investors remained cautious as they assessed the potential impact of elevated crude prices on inflation, interest rates and economic growth. Higher US Treasury yields also added to the risk-off mood, keeping investors wary of interest-rate-sensitive assets and emerging markets.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 74770.03, up by 5.80 points or 0.01% after trading in a range of 74697.94 and 74910.96. There were 14 stocks advancing against 16 stocks declining on the index.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were IT up by 1.08%, TECK up by 0.58%, Oil & Gas up by 0.54%, PSU up by 0.43% and Bankex up by 0.32%, while Auto down by 0.84%, Capital Goods down by 0.62%, Telecom down by 0.48%, Realty down by 0.42% and Power down by 0.35% were the top losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were Tech Mahindra up by 2.81%, TCS up by 0.79%, ITC up by 0.77%, Axis Bank up by 0.75% and Infosys up by 0.72%. Meanwhile, expressing optimism about India’s growth prospects, NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Ashok Kumar Lahiri said the Indian economy has been doing reasonably well and that Asia’s third-largest economy will regain its mojo and return to a current account surplus soon. He said the major challenge facing the Indian economy is the low share of manufacturing in India’s overall Gross Domestic Product (GDP). India’s economy grew at a faster-than-expected 7.8 per cent in the April-June quarter, showing resilience despite concerns that the war in Iran and resulting global uncertainty could weigh on domestic economic momentum.

On foreign investment in India, Lahiri said domestic savings, rather than foreign savings, must do most of the heavy lifting. He explained that in the early part of the 19th century, the United States imported capital from Europe, while East Asia consistently ran current account surpluses because it attracted foreign direct investment (FDI) and foreign portfolio investment (FPI). However, most of the investment was financed by domestic savings.

He said, “Normally, when GDP goes up, the share of agriculture goes down, and the share of industry, which includes manufacturing and some other sectors, and services goes up. But if you look at developed countries, manufacturing has gone down, but it has gone down at a much higher per capita income than what was threatening to be a problem.” He pointed out that India’s recent GDP data shows that the share of manufacturing in GDP has increased. He added, “But we need much more manufacturing now.” He said the entry of foreign players into the country and the investments taking place in renewable energy, data centres, semiconductors and electronic manufacturing are very positive developments.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 23422.60, down by 8.90 points or 0.04% after trading in a range of 23409.30 and 23494.95. There were 23 stocks advancing against 26 stocks declining, while 1 stock remain unchanged on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were Tech Mahindra up by 1.84%, ONGC up by 1.57%, TCS up by 0.95%, Cipla up by 0.84% and State Bank of India up by 0.84%.
