Markets trim opening gains amid higher oil prices

Indian equity benchmarks made positive start on Tuesday supported by sharp rally in IT stocks and gains in heavyweight HDFC Bank. IT stocks traded higher as concerns over a slowdown in the pace of AI development eased some of the fears around the disruption that artificial intelligence could cause to traditional Indian IT services companies. Also, value buying emerged in beaten down stocks, after five consecutive weekly losses. 

Sensex and Nifty soon trimmed their gains and were trading higher with some divergent, as Sensex outperforming Nifty garnering 0.27%, while Nifty inched up by 0.08%. traders were concerned amid higher oil prices and global bond yields ahead of this week's Federal Reserve meeting kept gains in check. Also, there was some cautiousness as India’s retail inflation rose to 4.82% in August, driven by costly onions and other food items; wholesale price-based inflation increased to 9.92% in August from 9.78% in July.

On the global front, most of the Asian markets traded lower ahead to key central bank meetings in the US and Japan. The US Federal Open Market Committee begins its two-day meeting later on Tuesday, while the Bank of Japan is scheduled to announce its policy decision later this week.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 74985.42, up by 203.66 points or 0.27% after trading in a range of 74955.44 and 75436.44. There were 12 stocks advancing against 18 stocks declining on the index.

The gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were IT up by 4.03%, TECK up by 2.56%, FMCG up by 0.60%, Oil & Gas up by 0.09% and Auto up by 0.02%, while Capital Goods down by 1.42%, Industrials down by 1.25%, Power down by 1.19%, Realty down by 0.90% and Basic Materials down by 0.88% were the top losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were HCL Technologies up by 6.45%, Tech Mahindra up by 5.62%, TCS up by 4.93%, Infosys up by 4.78% and HDFC Bank up by 1.93%. On the flip side, Bharat Electronics down by 2.64%, NTPC down by 1.49%, Bajaj Finserv down by 1.34%, Titan Company down by 1.24% and Power Grid down by 1.19% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, with an aim to strengthen bi-lateral relations, India and Canada have started fourth round of negotiations for the proposed Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), as the two sides look to conclude the talks this year. The issues that would figure in the five-day (September 14-18) talks include trade in goods, services, rules of origin, and technical trade barriers, among others. The third round was held in July in Ottawa.

The negotiations are important as the two sides have targeted to increase bilateral trade to $50 billion by 2030. In 2025-26, two-way trade dipped 8.22 per cent to $7.95 billion ($4.67 billion exports and $3.28 billion imports) from $8.66 billion in 2024-25 ($4.22 billion exports and $4.44 billion imports).

Key exports from India to Canada include pharmaceuticals, iron and steel, seafood, cotton garments, electronic goods and chemicals, among others. The main imports include pulses, pearls and semi-precious stones, coal, fertiliser, paper and petroleum crude. India's main services sector exports include telecommunications, computer and information services, and other business services. Canada is also home to over 4,25,000 Indian students and a strong Indian community.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 23417.20, up by 19.10 points or 0.08% after trading in a range of 23415.40 and 23592.85. There were 20 stocks advancing against 29 stocks declining, while 1 stock remain unchanged on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were HCL Technologies up by 6.63%, TCS up by 5.23%, Tech Mahindra up by 5.22%, Infosys up by 4.78% and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles up by 4.57%. On the flip side, Bharat Electronics down by 2.37%, Shriram Finance down by 1.77%, Grasim Industries down by 1.69%, NTPC down by 1.69% and Larsen & Toubro down by 1.54% were the top losers.

Asian markets were trading mostly in red; Taiwan Weighted lost 126.38 points or 0.28% to 45,736.14, Hang Seng declined 80.6 points or 0.32% to 24,837.00, Jakarta Composite plunged 61.15 points or 0.94% to 6,473.54, KOSPI dropped 15.45 points or 0.23% to 6,668.92 and Shanghai Composite weakened 3.92 points or 0.1% to 3,881.41. On the other hand, Nikkei 225 surged 199.01 points or 0.31% to 63,692.00 and Straits Times was up by 4.33 points or 0.08% to 5,661.75.
