Key gauges continue to trade marginally in green in late morning deals
Sep-17-2026

Indian equity benchmarks continued to trade marginally in green in late morning deals as crude oil prices eased slightly from their recent highs, although caution prevailed after the US Federal Reserve's rate hike and indications of further tightening. Traders took support with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Deputy Managing Director Nigel Clarke stating that India remains a key driver of global growth and continues to be the world’s fastest-growing major economy, supported by strong fundamentals and sound policy frameworks.

Both Sensex and Nifty were trading in green in late morning deals, but the indices showed a divergence in gains. The BSE Sensex was trading with marginal gains of over 0.10% supported by buying in select heavyweight stocks from sectors such as Industrials, Capital Goods and Power. Similarly, the Nifty 50 was trading with gains of over 0.20% on account of buying in index heavyweights, namely Eternal and HDFC Life Insurance. However, foreign fund outflows capped the gains in the domestic equities. On the global front, Asian markets are trading mostly in green as crude oil prices pulled back on easing Middle East supply concerns amid reports of Saudi Arabia loading crude cargoes via Oman.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 74433.73, up by 97.28 points or 0.13% after trading in a range of 74163.95 and 74589.80. There were 21 stocks advancing against 9 stocks declining on the index.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Industrials up by 1.11%, Capital Goods up by 1.08%, Power up by 0.89%, Realty up by 0.83% and Consumer Discretionary up by 0.81%, while IT down by 0.48%, TECK down by 0.30%, Oil & Gas down by 0.08%, Energy down by 0.07% and Bankex down by 0.06% were the top losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were Eternal up by 3.22%, Bharat Electronics up by 1.29%, Mahindra & Mahindra up by 1.24%, Interglobe Aviation up by 1.22% and Tata Steel up by 0.85%. On the flip side, HDFC Bank down by 1.12%, TCS down by 0.91%, HCL Technologies down by 0.91%, Infosys down by 0.91% and Tech Mahindra down by 0.45% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) has said that The Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) charges on UPI transactions above Rs 2,000 may push small merchants and cost-conscious consumers back to cash. With effect from October 15, UPI payments to merchants (P2M) above Rs 2,000 will attract a 0.4 per cent MDR with an overall cap of Rs 300.

Besides, a flat concessional MDR of Rs 5 would be applicable on specific merchant categories such as railways, telecom services, insurance, and fuel for transaction above Rs 2,000. GTRI Founder Ajay Srivastava said that UPI fees are not about revenue as keeping UPI free costs the government Rs 2,000-2,500 crore annually.

He stated ‘This is tiny compared with subsidies of Rs 2.03 lakh crore for food, Rs 1.68 lakh crore for fertilisers, Rs 22,800 crore for agricultural credit and Rs 12,500 crore for petroleum and LPG’. He noted the NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) itself earned Rs 3,270 crore and retained a surplus of Rs 1,552 crore in FY2025. He added that clearly, this is not a revenue problem and charging for UPI will not save public money.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 23270.50, up by 52.90 points or 0.23% after trading in a range of 23193.65 and 23325.40. There were 34 stocks advancing against 16 stocks declining on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were Eternal up by 3.20%, HDFC Life Insurance up by 3.17%, JIO Financial Services up by 1.78%, Bharat Electronics up by 1.59% and Interglobe Aviation up by 1.53%. On the flip side, ONGC down by 1.28%, HDFC Bank down by 0.96%, HCL Technologies down by 0.84%, Infosys down by 0.77% and TCS down by 0.76% were the top losers.
