Markets relinquish some gains in late trade
Sep-17-2026

Indian equity markets have relinquished some gains in late trade amid 25 basis point interest rate hike by US Federal Reserve for the first time since 2023 in an effort to quell high inflation. Besides, it has signalled another rate hike later this year. Further, continuous selling by the foreign institutional investors (FIIs) weighed on market risk sentiment. The FIIs were the net sellers on Wednesday’s session, offloading securities worth Rs 2,032.61 crore. However, markets continued to trade in positive territory as some ease in crude oil prices supported the market sentiments.

Sensex was trading with meagre gains ahead of weekly expiry of its F&O contracts, while Nifty was trading with gains of near four tenth of a percent, supported by buying among Industrials, Insurance, and financial services counters.

On the global front, Asian equity markets were trading mixed ahead of high-level U.S.-China talks scheduled for this weekend. European equity markets were trading higher as global crude oil prices retreated from recent highs.

The meeting comes at a time when the US industry is keen on investing in the nuclear sector in India as it aims to achieve 100 GW atomic energy capability by 2047. The two sides discussed India’s power infrastructure requirements for emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence, high-performance computing and data centres, as well as India’s nuclear energy expansion roadmap. They also discussed strengthening cooperation in clean energy, resilient energy infrastructure and emerging technologies.

Highlighting India’s rapid progress in building a secure and resilient energy system, Manohar Lal noted that the country has achieved 552 GW of installed capacity, with non-fossil sources accounting for more than 50 per cent of the energy mix, besides making advances in solar power, energy storage, nuclear energy and clean cooking access. He also emphasised India’s commitment to technology-neutral, inclusive energy pathways and global cooperation through International Solar Alliance (ISA), One Sun One World One Grid (OSOWOG) and the Global Biofuels Alliance.

During discussions on ‘Permitting and Regulatory Efficiency’, Lal outlined India’s reforms to streamline approvals and strengthen regulatory predictability through digital platforms including the National Single Window System, PARIVESH, and PM Gati Shakti. He stressed that efficient permitting is essential for timely infrastructure development and called for enhanced G20 collaboration in capacity building and regulatory modernisation.
