Indices extend gains in late morning deals
Sep-23-2026

Domestic equity indices extended their gains in late morning deals on account of buying by funds and retail investors. Domestic sentiment was boosted by falling crude oil prices. Further, support came in after Fitch Ratings raised India's GDP growth forecast for the current fiscal year to 6.9 per cent, from 6.4 per cent, citing strong economic growth in the June quarter and overall economic resilience.

Both the Sensex and Nifty were trading higher, gaining around half percent, driven by buying in Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank, Bajaj Finance, Larsen & Toubro, and State Bank of India. On the global front, Asian markets were trading mostly higher amid optimism about a diplomatic resolution to the US-Iran conflict after US and Iranian officials held a three-hour meeting on the sidelines of the UN gathering.

The BSE Sensex is currently trading at 74911.92, up by 382.84 points or 0.51% after trading in a range of 74599.88 and 74911.92. There were 25 stocks advancing against 5 stocks declining on the index.

The top gaining sectoral indices on the BSE were Metal up by 1.54%, Realty up by 1.53%, Basic Materials up by 1.16%, FMCG up by 1.05%, and Industrials up by 0.73%, while IT down by 0.25% and TECK down by 0.02% were the only losing indices on BSE.

The top gainers on the Sensex were Bajaj Finance up by 2.59%, Bajaj Finserv up by 1.68%, Tata Steel up by 1.60%, Larsen & Toubro up by 1.33% and ITC up by 1.30%. On the flip side, TCS down by 0.61%, Infosys down by 0.58%, ICICI Bank down by 0.21%, Titan Company down by 0.19% and Mahindra & Mahindra down by 0.07% were the top losers.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has said that public capital expenditure (capex) in India has successfully crowded in private investment, and the impact now reflected in higher capital formation, improved manufacturing capacity utilisation and stronger bank credit to industry. The government has increased capital expenditure to more than Rs 12 lakh crore in 2026-27, while actual capital expenditure-- including central grants to states for creating capital assets-- has exceeded Rs 17 lakh crore.

The minister said crowding-in is now visible with gross fixed capital formation rising to over 34 per cent of GDP in the first quarter of 2026-27 (Q1FY27) and registering around 12 per cent growth in real terms. Manufacturing capacity utilisation has also increased to 75 per cent. This operational velocity has been unlocked by resolving the twin balance sheet crisis. India now operates with a 'twin balance sheet advantage' under which commercial banks have the liquidity to lend while corporations have the solvency to invest. Bank credit growth to industry also accelerated, rising 19 per cent year-on-year in June 2026.

She said credit is reaching those who need it, and the government's free trade agreements (FTAs) are creating greater market access for labour-intensive goods and services. She urged the commercial sector to capitalise on these opportunities. She also highlighted improvements in India's infrastructure and logistics ecosystem, saying the country's execution tempo had helped dismantle the earlier perception of chronic administrative delays. Average turnaround time at major ports has nearly halved over the past decade, while the rail network is now almost fully electrified. Rail freight loading has also reached a record 1,670 million tonnes.

The CNX Nifty is currently trading at 23440.40, up by 111.40 points or 0.48% after trading in a range of 23349.55 and 23445.90. There were 37 stocks advancing against 13 stocks declining on the index.

The top gainers on Nifty were Bajaj Finance up by 2.48%, Hindalco Industries up by 1.76%, Bajaj Finserv up by 1.57%, Tata Steel up by 1.51% and JSW Steel up by 1.48%. On the flip side, Coal India down by 0.98%, Cipla down by 0.69%, TCS down by 0.57%, Infosys down by 0.52% and Titan Company down by 0.51% were the top losers.

Asian markets were trading mostly in green; Taiwan Weighted added 357.12 points or 0.74% to 48,157.29, Jakarta Composite gained 40.42 points or 0.64% to 6,317.46, KOSPI increased 32.25 points or 0.46% to 7,050.16 and Straits Times rose 4.61 points or 0.08% to 5,728.37.
