India’s industrial growth rises to 8.0% in August

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) in its quick estimates has shown that industrial growth rose to 8.0 percent in the month of August 2026 (Base 2022-23=100) from a revised growth of 7.4 percent in July 2026 led by robust growth in manufacturing and electricity generation. The growth was 4.7 percent in August 2025. The Quick Estimate of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) stood at 123.3 in August 2026 against 114.2 in August 2025. Besides, IIP growth for April-August period of 2026 stood at 6.7 percent, up from 4.2 percent in April-August period of 2025. Meanwhile, the IIP data for July 2026 has been revised to 7.4 percent from 6.7 percent estimated in previous month.

As per the data, the Mining & Quarrying showed contraction of 5.6 percent in August 2026 as against a contraction of 0.9 percent in July 2026, while the growth was 15.8 percent in August 2025. Manufacturing growth rose to 9.0 percent in August 2026 from 8.2 in July 2026, while it was 3.6 percent in August 2025. Electricity & Gas Supply jumped to 12.3 percent in August 2026 from 8.7 in July 2026, while it was 3.7 percent in August 2025. Water Supply, Sewerage & Waste Management growth fell to 6.3 percent in August 2026 from 7.4 in July 2026, while it was 6.9 percent in August 2025. The indices of Industrial Production for Mining & Quarrying, Manufacturing, Electricity & Gas Supply and Water Supply, Sewerage & Waste Management for the month of August 2026 stood at 85.7, 126.6, 133.9 and 147.6 respectively.

Within the Manufacturing sector, 18 out of 23 industry groups at NIC 2 digit-level have recorded a positive growth in August 2026 over August 2025. The top three positive contributors for the month of August 2026 are - “Manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers” (25.2%), “Manufacture of electrical equipment” (30.9%), and “Manufacture of other transport equipment” (25.3%).

As per the Use-Based Classification, the indices stood at 111.8 for Primary Goods, 140.7 for Capital Goods, 131.8 for Intermediate Goods and 132.5 for Infrastructure/ Construction Goods for the month of August 2026. Further, the indices for Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables stood at 129.4 and 114.3 respectively. The corresponding growth rates of IIP as per Use-Based Classification in August 2026 over August 2025 are 3.5 percent in Primary Goods, 16.9 percent in Capital Goods, 13.7 percent in Intermediate Goods, 6.4 percent in Infrastructure/ Construction Goods, 11.1 percent in Consumer durables and 2.1 percent in Consumer non-durables. Based on Use-Based Classification, top three positive contributors to the growth of IIP for the month of August 2026 are Intermediate Goods, Capital Goods and Consumer durables.
