Congress to hold CWC meet on Tuesday to chalk out strategy for CEC's ouster
Sep-28-2026

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has called a meeting of the party’s Working Committee on Tuesday, September 29, to discuss the reported differences within the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and chalk out the party’s strategy for seeking chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s removal.

Kharge said the Election Commissioners had raised concerns over the SIR process, changes relating to Form 6 for enrolment of new voters, additions and deletions from electoral rolls, and centralised control of the electoral-roll database. He said the issue is very serious and concerns the survival of democracy in the country and has to be taken up on priority.

Congress president said that the Election Commission was acting in line with the BJP’s interests, citing a claim involving the CEC and a former Kerala chief secretary. Kharge further called for Kumar's resignation.

The former party chief Rahul Gandhi and senior leaders including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jairam Ramesh and K.C. Venugopal are likely to attend CWC meeting, chaired by Kharge. Party sources said the meeting would discuss ways to step up pressure for Kumar’s removal and the Congress’s wider response to the Election Commission controversy. They said preparations for the upcoming polls are also likely to be discussed.

Meanwhile, the opposition INDIA bloc would also meet on Wednesday to chalk out a joint strategy on the issue and is likely to file another notice for removal of CEC Kumar in Parliament.
